In July 2002, five curling players were at a loss as to how they could further their participation in wheelchair curling. They wanted to play more together, and against able-bodied curlers too, and to compete in future Scottish Championships. And so Braehead Wheelchair Curling Club was formed.
The club has gradually increased it's membership over the years and at present has thirty-one wheelchair members and fifteen able-bodied members. BWCC is proud to be a club that is open to both able-bodied and disabled people.
The club had three representatives for Scotland at the 2002 World Wheelchair Championships in Sursee, where the team gained the bronze medal.
This was followed in 2004, again in Sursee, where three Braehead Wheelchair Curling Club members were in the team representing Scotland. This time the colour was gold!
In 2005 the World Championships were on home ground at Braehead, Glasgow, and once again three BWCC club members did the club proud by being part of yet another gold winning performance for Scotland.
At the Paralympics in Torino, four Braehead wheelchair club curlers adorned the Great Britain Jersey, gaining the silver medal.
In 2007, Braehead Wheelchair Curling Club proudly supplied all five of the the Scottish World Championship team in Solleftea Sweden.
In its short existence so far, Braehead Wheelchair Curling Club and its members has produced consistent success at the highest level. The goal of the club is to continue with that success by attracting and developing players with the potential for quality.
